Today five more Australians will be told they have multiple sclerosis, a progressive disease of the nervous system, for which there is no known cause, and no cure to date.An estimated 2,500,000 people worldwide and 20,000 Australian’s have MS which is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, where scarring on the brain and spinal cord occurs, slowing or interrupting the transmission of nerve impulses.
Multiple sclerosis is a very variable condition and the symptoms depend on which areas of the central nervous system have been affected. There is no set pattern to MS and every sufferer has a different set of symptoms, which vary from time to time and can change in severity and duration, even in the same person. The effects the symptoms of MS have on employment, social activities and quality of life are tremendous, and the symptoms themselves can make daily life a nightmare. In spite of considerable research, there are still very few effective treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS).
MS has affected a very important member of the Sleepyhead and FIAA Queensland family, and the furniture industry at large, for the past 11 years, so when we heard about the launch of a Queensland led three year program to find the cause of MS, we knew we had to get involved. $300,000 needs to be raised to make this project happen. As an industry we want encourage everyone to band together to help raise funds for this extremely important cause.
On Friday the 12th of November 2010, Sleepyhead will be holding a 4 Ball Ambrose, Shotgun start Charity Golf Day and auction where all proceeds will be donated to MS Research Australia. The event will be held at Victoria Park Golf Club in Brisbane. We would like to invite any members of the industry who wish to support this special cause to join us. The cost of entry is $500 for a team of four, or $300 for a team of two and we encourage all involved companies to donate an item to the post golf auction. Register your team today and help raise much needed funds for MS Research.
