Frequently asked questions

Which Sleepyhead mattress would be best for me?

Do you suffer from partner disturbance at night, or wake up with back and neck aches? Maybe you're a hot sleeper and need a bed designed for breathability, or you value head-to-toe support that adjusts to your body shape. The best mattress is the one that's right for you, which means it meets your physical needs, provides value for money, and gives you a great night's sleep every night. We understand that there are a lot of mattresses out there, and it can be confusing trying to work out which one is best for you. That's why we've created some useful resources to help you choose the right mattress for you, and decide which mattress size suits you best. We also highly recommend going into a store and trying out different mattress models and feels before buying. You'll get a much better idea of what works for you!

How often should you replace a mattress?

You should plan to replace your mattress every 8 to 10 years, but listen to your body. If you regularly wake up feeling stiff and sore, or if you aren't sleeping as well as you did a year ago, it might be time. Check your mattress for visible signs of wear and tear. Ask yourself whether you're sleeping better or worse than you did a year ago. If you're sleeping worse, a new mattress could be the answer. Other signs that you may need a new mattress include visible wear and tear, sleep that is frequently disrupted by your partner moving, or neck, back, shoulder or hip pain that rest isn't fixing.

Why should I rotate my mattress?

To avoid your mattress wearing out any sooner than it should, it is important to take good care of it. Rotating your mattress helps avoid early sagging and damage. We recommend turning your mattress every fortnight for the first four months and then once every three months after. Be sure to check the instructions for your particular mattress: many models aren't designed to be flipped over, and doing so could damage them.

What does my Sleepyhead mattress warranty cover and how long does it last?

Check out our warranty information and conditions for specific information and details about Sleepyhead product and mattress warranty cover. Each Sleepyhead mattress is uniquely designed and the warranty duration varies between styles. What mattress should I choose if my partner weighs a lot more than I do?

Partner disturbance is an issue for many Australians. When there’s a significant difference in the weights of two sleepers sharing a bed we usually recommend a Sensorzone spring system found in our Sleepyhead Sanctuary range. Another strong option for personalised support is the Smart Suspension Technology found in the SleepMaker For You range. When you're deciding on a mattress, be sure you take your partner and try out a few models together. That way you'll get a good idea how well each partner is supported, and how well partner disturbance is minimised.

Which mattress size is right for me?

Choosing the right mattress size depends on your sleep preferences and the available bedroom space. Below are the different Sleepyhead mattress sizes available:
Single 92cm x 188cm, Long Single 92cm x 203cm, King Single 107cm x 203cm, Double 137cm x 188cm, Long Double 137cm x 203cm, Queen 153cm x 203cm, King 183cm x 203cm, Super King 203cm x 203cm."

Will my mattress get body impressions?

Most likely! It’s natural for your mattress to contour to your body shape as you sleep on it. It’s because of all those comfort layers on top, so the contouring will be even more noticeable if you’ve got a plush mattress. We suggest rotating your mattress every 3 months so it wears evenly. We also recommend sleeping across as much of the mattress as possible, so you don't end up with a different feel in the middle of the mattress where nobody usually sleeps.

How to choose a mattress in Australia?

Start with your ideal bed size: go as big as you can without crowding your bedroom. Next, think about feel. Side sleepers benefit from softer comfort layers for pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers often prefer medium to firm support. Finally, consider any specific needs like temperature regulation if you sleep hot, or motion isolation if you share your bed. Not sure where to begin? Check out our Bed Buying Guide, Mattress Size Guide, and explore our Sleep Guide articles to find your perfect match.

What is the best mattress for back pain in Australia?

The best mattress for back pain will evenly support your body to keep your spine aligned while still relieving pressure at your hips and shoulders. Look for strong support with enough comfort layers to cushion without sagging. Back pain sufferers should consider the Sleepyhead Swisstek, which features support specifically designed to reduce pressure points and maintain proper posture throughout the night. Models with Sensorzone and Smart Suspension Technology will also offer superior support, along with a range of comfort technologies that relieve pressure for that perfect night's sleep.

Are foam mattresses good?

Foam mattresses are an excellent choice for many sleepers. Memory foam conforms closely to your body, relieving pressure points at hips and shoulders while minimizing motion transfer. They also reduce noise and work well with adjustable bases. These mattresses best suit side sleepers, people with joint pain, and those who prefer a "hugging" feel. However, they retain heat and may feel too soft for stomach sleepers or heavier individuals who need firmer support.
